About Us
BRICS Virtual Institute of Photonics (BRICS VIP) is an internet platform aimed to coordinate activities in the frame of BRICS initiatives in area of Photonics. BRICS VIP is expected to become an instrument to create a BRICS Photonic Ecosystem (BRICS-PE), capable of address properly and timely modern and appearing social challenges using the photonic-based technologies.
Aim
The BRICS VIP is an active network integrating, managing, and coordinating different Photonics related activities, establish and manage educational programmes (incl. on-line), provide information on Photonics achievements.

Creation
The creation of the Virtual Institute on Photonics was initiated during 1st Working Group Meeting of Photonics in 2018 and then approved by the BRICS Ministers of Science, Technology and Innovation in 2018 (Durban Declaration, 2018).

Photonics Background
The main area of photonics is the optical communication, which becomes even more important in view of the transformation of the modern society to its information centric one.
There are also photonics-based sensors such as cameras, infrared sensors, hyperspectral imagers that will also become IoT enabled. In the future, more data will be generated and transferred because of more devices being connected.
This requires R&D efforts to produce energy efficient devices capable of arranging data so that only essential information is transferred and can easily interface with other devices.
In the emerging industry 4.0 paradigm, advanced photonic systems and the integrated use of sensor technologies for real-time parameter monitoring will be at the heart of fully digital and connected value chains.

Education
BRICS VIP provides an optimum platform for coordinating education related issues for the BRICS countries, separated spatially by rather large distances from each other.
On-line
On-line courses, real time chat discussions, fast consulting for enterprises and other services will be organized on permanent basis.
Support
The main principles and requirements for the education in photonics (on all levels from BS to PhD) will be discussed and matched using the web platform.
Individual Approach
BRICS Photonics Congress will be held on regular basis combined with a set of Workshops and Summer Schools. Best world practices in education will be transferred and introduces to the VIP members.
BRICS Meetings
1st Working Group on Photonics
The 1st Meeting of the Working Group on Photonics was held in Russia in accordance with the BRICS Jaipur Declaration signed at the 5th BRICS Science, Technology and Innovation Ministerial Meeting on July, 18 2017 and the revised BRICS Work Plan 2015-2018 as well as the Action Plan 2017-2020
4th Meeting of the BRICS Working Group
Skoltech representatives took part at the Fourth Meeting of the BRICS Working Group on Photonics held in Brazil (online and offline). Skoltech is the coordinating point for BRICS activities in photonics in Russia under supervision of the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education. The team are working on developing joint mechanisms for BRICS collaboration including finalizing BRICS roadmap on photonics, developing potential collaboration with BRICS industry, PIC ecosystem development in Russia and BRICS.

BRAZIL
National Strategy on Science, Technology and Innovation 2016/2022

The National Strategy on Science, Technology and Innovation (ENCTI 2016-2022)
proposes the establishment of a collaborative innovation paradigm in Brazil, one that encourages the strengthening of relations between University and Businesses, and the interaction among the different components of the National Science, Technology and Innovation System – SNCTI. It provides guidance to the System in terms of how to find solutions for considerable social, environmental and economic challenges, thus contributing to the construction of sustainable development bases in the country.

The planning of the National Science, Technology and Innovation System is based on the National Strategy on Science, Technology and Innovation as a critical document and on the Action Plans
developed thereof as documents with an operational nature. Plans are based on the Strategic Themes outlined in the National Strategy and their elaboration process was concluded in 2017, with consensus on initiatives that will unfold by 2022.

National Photonics Strategy for South Africa

This document sets forth a strategy for Photonics RDI in South Africa, which will be referred to as the Photonics Initiative of South Africa (PISA). The strategy is a result of an extensive consultative process, which included:

  • Analyses of the local photonics environment by a various working groups.
  • International benchmarking studies.
  • Focused mini workshops and meetings.
  • A national workshop involving industry, academia and science councils on the 5 and 6th August 2008.
The strategy document provides background to Photonics as a discipline and its interaction with other disciplines, a situational analysis of the current state of Photonics in South Africa, with a specific focus on research, human capital development and commercial activities as well as global trends in Photonics. Further, the role of Photonics is explained within the context of the National System of Innovation. The strategy sets forth a vision for PISA: "To position South Africa as a globally competitive player in Photonics. "

The mission of PISA is: "To harness the potential presented by Photonics in the development of human capital, stimulation of multidisciplinary basic and applied research as well as creation of economic opportunities for South Africa and the region".
